While it’s no secret that I have a great distain for Internet Explorer, it doesn’t mean that I can remove it from my everyday life. The boneheads from work that says that I have to use Internet Explorer to do my job, and knowing that it’s the most insecure browser, and the slowest, doesn’t make me any happier.

The one thing that makes me just a little more accepting of Internet Explorer is when I don’t have to use it through the stock interface. So many developers have created their own user interface for the Trident rendering engine [the same one Internet Explorer uses]. These same users have come up with great interfaces, functions and features that Microsoft would have never thought of or offered on their own.

From time to time there’s a situation where I’ll find someone that using Internet Explorer and immediately recommend that they switch off, but in certain cases where they can’t, I recommend that they use SLIMBROWSER [freeware] from FlashPeak.

SLIMBROWSER is a really good front end to your everyday web browsing, I’m not going to say that it’s the best, but for me personally, it does everything that I need it to do.

Some of the most useful:

Opening Closed or Opening sites from the last session.
I don’t really know why, but I get a bit click happy sometimes and close websites that I shouldn’t; this is the time you wish you had this feature. You won’t find this stock with Internet Explorer, but you may find it with other Trident browsers out there.

Translations

S ince I’m self centered and only think of myself and I only plan on speaking the language of my country, I need a translator to make sense of those random letters and shapes when I’m surfing over seas and in other countries.

Google and Babelfish are the ones built-in to the application.

I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to pick the right Chinese translator, it always comes out like bad flea market deal gone bad.

AutoLogins

W hile some security nuts out there are going balk at this, I love this feature. AutoLogin is the best feature [imho] because I can setup a site, webpage or any other login page and log right in to them without having to do a thing; click I’m in. No muss, no fuss just simple straight fun.

I don’t know what the login limit is, but I’ve plenty and it’s still going.

Content Control

One thing all browser should have is quick access to what you want to or don’t want to download.

No one should be a victim to everything that’s just put in front of your face. With options like disabling sounds, video, flash and so on, you can really cut some BS where you need to.

The in-page ad filter is another thing. Why Internet Explorer doesn’t have more functions/features like this, I’ll never know.

SLIMBROWSER can filter any URL from coming in or being displayed in the browser with it’s universal filter. I personally block anything with ‘AD.*’ in the URL.

Probably because if Microsoft built that in to their browser is would immediately put a dent in peoples advertising budgets; why advertise when no one sees the ads anyway?

 Options for Emailing Informaiton

Options for sharing your pages or finds is something you should always have to do. And the option to ‘SEND LINK’ just is so uneventful and lack luster.

I like sending the ‘TITLE and ADDRESS’. It’s quick and it’s formal. I don’t have to describe it, the title is already there and the recipient doesn’t have to see anything unless they click on the link.

If you like sending interesting links to people this is a smart and quick way to do it.

Page Zoom
If you’re running a high resolution and your looking at a website that’s just not easy to read. The ZOOM functions are right there in the toolbar.

It really doesn’t matter what your looking [text or images] it enlarges the whole page and makes it easier on the eyes. It’s accessible; I like it.

So while I can’t get everyone to switch from Internet Explorer to Firefox, they can try something better than the stock garbage.

Acknowledgement, while you may be using a front-end to Trident, your using the same engine Internet Explorer uses and therefore, you’re still subject to some security risks, but I think your better off using something more advanced than the stock open-door security policy Internet Explorer offers.

And listen, your always going to find better front-ends for the ‘Trident Engine’ with other developers. Microsoft doesn’t have a clue how to make a GUI [hello? Vista] or much less knows what the Internet browsing community wants. Other wise they would’ve bought these guys or someone like it long time ago to do the thinking for them.

There are programs on the internet that want to offer you assistance by providing you a tool/program, keep information, orgainze it, keep your passwords and while are shareware, some are freeware.

The problem with some of these solutions, mostly shareware, they provide these tools as a opportunity to trap you in their application. The idea is that you’ll use the progra and then once you determine you aren’t going to stay with it, you going to have to becuase they don’t offer a EXPORT option.

The open source community seems to understand this pretty well and knows that people need options, but whereas freeware will be more than happy to offer an EXPORT option, the shareware guys would to prefer you to be stuck in their program and have to stay with them forever.

My opinion, putting in information to a program, getting it out is just as important.

It’s not funny to anyone that’s place in this position. The information these persons are working with is theirs; they own it or created it, and they’re basically being held hostage.

I was recently testing out a shareware package, ROBOFORM, and yeah I tested it for sometime, but that’s because I was lazy, but I didn’t want to keep the program, but at the same time the program specizes in keeping passwords and has no EXPORT option; it didn’t have a EXPORT option if you bought it. And this my point.

Make sure that when your trying software, before you get too involved with it, make sure you can get out of it. So if the application is no longer supported, or if you decide that there’s a better program [like I did] you can get your data out of it.

As a person that has more than half a brain [that's working], this makes me dangerous and intimidating to most corporate ‘tech support’ nut heads out there.

The corporate tech support nowadays is the equivalent to the introduction of a voice mail box or an automated response to ‘if your skin is blue press #2 on your phone.’

Trying to find answers to your own issues is [in my experience] the best way to go. Contacting tech support for Nuance, Target, Creative, Acer or some other corporate sweat shop, your just gonna get crap.

I don’t like contacting support, but when I absolutely have to I’m pleasantly reminded each time how stupid they really are.

When I submit my issues they’re coherent, they make sense, they have a beginning and ending. I actually take the time to send them exactly what I’m doing and compose it the best I possibly can in the hopes that I might catch someone that can read, but alas, it’s never happened. I always seem to get JoBoo the tech support jargon master of circular diagrams and canned responses.

The corporate tech support dogs have their army of ‘Canned Responses’ to everything.

Keep in mind, I don’t mind canned responses when they actually apply to what I’m doing or having a issue with, but my problem is when I get canned responses for crap I didn’t even report! The thing about ‘canned responses’ is that the person has to actually be able to read the problem first, to give the proper response.

This means that dumb-dumb head [maybe not even a real person] on the other end just scanned it for a few key words and then replied back with ‘using your can opener, replace the monitor to make the modem faster and upgrade your Internet’.

I find that if I can find a public discussion forum out there with real people, I get much better results. And overall, I’m happier with the results. At least the answers to questions or issues pertains to your question and not what color the sky is because you said, ‘blue screen of death’.

It’s just so painfully obvious that when corporates say 24/7 that it’s true, but it’s usually not within a timely fashion [taking 48 hours to respond isn't timely]. Having to use my ‘Spider man decoder ring’ to decrypt JoBoo’s ethnic slurs of my native language is not support, giving me information to problems I don’t have is not support. I need answers to my problem, I don’t want NEW problems.

The corporate sweat shops hire the rock bottom of the barrel people, pay them almost nothing [because they have to know nothing] and just have them listen for key words and look up solutions; No thinking or computer knowledge is required. It’s only when you keep on them do you get a response from someone higher, but you’ve to be persistent. You’ve gotta hold that line baby, because any attempt they can, they’re going to try to ‘PUNT’ you to someone else.

So if you want answers, try a knowledge base first, try to find a discussion forum on the subject, state your case and see if someone can help you. It seems that’s where people that can READ hang out. If that doesn’t work, put your boots on, put on your goggles and watch your behind, because they’re going to try to take you for a ride!

While others will argue that using the web-based e-mail client is the way to go, I like having my information on my machine locally. I guess I’m just old-fashioned.

And speaking of old-fashioned, I’ve got myself a new PC that’s 64-bit, I’m trying to make sure that everything that I picked up or install is 64-bit compatible.

One of my favorite applications is Thunderbird, but I’m kind of disappointed in the development of the application over the past couple of years. It seems the application just isn’t getting attention it deserves or it’s not moving fast enough in directions that would make the application more attractive.

One of the biggest things that I love about Thunderbird is the amount of extensions and extra functions you can add to the e-mail client to do special things, but the client it’s self is really plain.

Although Thunderbird is a good email client, the next version is about to be released and I’m just not getting the vibe that it’s moving very far in a forward direction.

Application startup

When you start Thunderbird there should really be a summary page. There should be a page that links to your calendar, your tasks, your e-mail accounts and reminders.

There should also be a home button on the Thunderbird toolbar that allows you at any point to go back to this summary page to see all this information at once.

In Thunderbird, there is an option to select the start page. When you open the application the it’s supposed to default to this page, but if you have a custom default page specified once you move away from this page you can’t get back to; I haven’t found the button, nor the shortcut to get back there- you have to restart Thunderbird application…

Composition Window

Adding recipients to an e-mail is one of the most frustrating things that I do with Thunderbird, and it’s one of the most basic things that you have to do with an e-mail client.

I don’t really understand the execution of this process. The recipients of the e-mail are listed in a column and the recipient type is denoted just to the left of the e-mail address; to me this is just stupid.

If you dealing with one or two recipients, it’s not a big deal, but periodically I will send e-mails to a bunch of people and to make sure that I’ve selected all the people that want, I have to scroll through this long list of e-mails; it’s just time consuming.

While I hate admitting it, I think that most of the other email clients got it right by separating the contacts by a comma or a semicolon; keeping the contacts grouped by TO, CC and BCC. By keeping the contacts grouped the person composing e-mail can quickly see, by section, if the recipient has been added or added to the correct group.

E-mail signatures

Again, one of the most basic things that Thunderbird lacks is the ability to have, or manage, signatures. Thunderbird has the ability to assign a signature file; who does this?

There should be at least a basic editor to allow for the creation of a signature or signature file. Why do you have to have an HTML editor or a word processor to create a signature file and then import a signature file into Thunderbird; it doesn’t make any sense at all.

I mean at the very least you could have a text box that you could compose just a simple text that says thank you and your name; problem solved.

Embedding videos

In composing an e-mail, I would like to be able to embed a video. I don’t want to sen a 26 MB e-mail, but I would like o be able to send an embedded YouTube videos to my family and friends. Current practices allow for videos to be embedded into websites because they’re based on HTML; E-mails are composed in HTML.

Thunderbird allows for the injection of direct HTML code and therefore you should be able to embed YouTube videos into e-mails.

This seems like such an obvious ability that I’m surprised that Thunderbird doesn’t have this. The RSS feeds seem to handle it fine.

The example that I’m showing does absolutely nothing in Thunderbird, but if you view the source code from the composition of the HTML e-mail, the code is there.

Calendar and Task integration

Thunderbird is a good e-mail client, but I would never use it without the integration of the calendar and the tasks. It seems to me that Google is the biggest portal for integration. I don’t know why Thunderbird has not made more strides to synchronize Google contacts, calendar events and tasks.

The Mozilla foundation almost has a direct line, a Bat Phone if you will, to Google, why does Thunderbird still require a plug-in to make this work? I mean you have to install Lightning and Google provider to make this feature work. This is a serious oversight for Thunderbird.

Address Book

I don’t understand this area either. They want you to put all this information into the address book for Thunderbird, but they don’t allow for printing envelopes, labels or creating a mailing list; there’s not even extensions for this. What would you put all this information into an application that you can’t easily get the information out of?

Thunderbird is expecting you to put people’s home addresses, work addresses, birthdays, phone numbers and more, but yet the use of this type of information is clumsily utilized. Where’s the map for the home address [from Google], where’s the reminders for the birthdays, where’s the integration for the instant messenger [MSN, YAHOO, GTalk, etc] status in the application?

If you’re going to take the time to put all the information into the address book, the very least you can do is utilize the information in an intuitive way. If the contact in the address book has a phone number for a MOBILE; it would stand to reason that you could send this person a SMS message. If they have a Hotmail account you can assume they are going to handle IM conversations.

While I don’t have a detailed listing of everything that’s changed in the upcoming version of Thunderbird, all the changes could be just under the hood; something I’m just not noticing.

The only noticeable change that I’ve seen so far in the next release of Thunderbird has been in the preview of the e-mails in the inbox.

I’m glad they’ve done something with it, but I’m sure this could have been changed up very easily with another one of those plug-ins.

Again, all the changes to the application could be transparent, but when a new version of an application is released, I’m looking for the things that changed and the things that are going to make my life more enjoyable as it pertains to my e-mail client. If the next version of the application is so transparent that nothing has noticeably changed from the last version, I’m not impressed.

If Thunderbird can’t make some changes here soon that can show a reason to stay with it, I’ll move on to another email client that’s being developed by people who actually use the program they are developing.

Join me in saying that the google toolbar sucks. If you need a pop-up blocker, use the one in your browser (even IE has one). Here is a link to google’s faqs on the toolbar.

First, Google is becoming the Microsoft of the web. Yes, we all know that MS is not very good at anything web, Internet Explorer, MSN, Live, etc. Google is becoming too big to be the innovative one on the block. How many of their products, THAT THEY DEVELOPED, have been a success? Search has. Gmail has. Reader has in my eyes. But what else? They bought YouTube.

With that being said, Google is looking to find a way to grow. They are not that good at building products, aside from the few I wrote above. What they are doing is keeping as much information about everybody who uses any of their services to slap them with ads, or have someone else do it. I have a problem with this. I do not mind companies showing me ads to make money or provide me a service. I do not like how much detail they keep.

Google privacy snippets:

Some of our services, including Google Toolbar and Google Web Accelerator, send the uniform resource locators (“URLs”) of web pages that you request to Google. When you use these services, Google will receive and store the URL sent by the web sites you visit, including any personal information inserted into those URLs by the web site operator. Some Google services (such as Google Toolbar) enable you to opt-in or opt-out of sending URLs to Google, while for others (such as Google Web Accelerator) the sending of URLs to Google is intrinsic to the service. When you sign up for any such service, you will be informed clearly that the service sends URLs to Google, and whether and how you can opt-in or opt-out.

The biggest concern I have with Google is their Google Health. They do not comply with HIPAA. HIPAA is what hospitals, doctors, insurance companies and other companies in health care have to comply with on patient’s information records. This is so that you keep your information private. This scares me. I am putting a few excerpts of Google’s privacy policies below.

How does Google Health protect the privacy of users’ health information?

Our users control access to their health information when they use Google Health. It’s up to each user to choose who views or adds information to their Google Health profile, and users can revoke access at any time. We also allow users to view all of the activity on their accounts so they can ensure that only the people and services to whom they’ve granted access can view their profiles or add information to them. We do not sell user health data and will not share it with others unless our users explicitly authorize us to do so, except in the limited circumstances described in our Privacy Policy, such as when we’re required to do so by law.

Why are logs kept before being anonymized?

We strike a reasonable balance between the competing pressures we face, such as the privacy of our users, the security of our systems and the need for innovation. We believe anonymizing IP addresses after 9 months and cookies after 18 months strikes the right balance.

Is Google Health covered by HIPAA?

Unlike a doctor or health plan, Google Health is not regulated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), a federal law that establishes data confidentiality standards for patient health information. This is because Google does not store data on behalf of health care providers. Instead, our primary relationship is with you, the user. Under HIPAA, you have a right to obtain a copy of your medical records. If you choose to use Google Health, we’ll help you store and manage your medical records online.

Usage Information

If you are logged in, we may associate that information with your account. We may use clear GIFs (a.k.a. “Web Beacons”) in HTML-based emails sent to our users to track which emails are opened by recipients.

The infinite question is which browser is better, which is more secure, who’s more compatible and which is more flexible?

This is a argument that’s going to be asked everyday, if not multiple times a day.

While others have their opinions, I’ve mine; the thing that has me just regurgitating with joy is the tight integration of the Operating System and Internet Explorer. A browser is a browser is a browser; and the thing that gets Microsoft their market share and also damages the Internet at the same time is this tight sitting pair. Microsoft has taken the position of pairing the Operating System with their browser, so that means they can push out updates to computers that are running Windows [90% of the world] and then claim to have market dominance. Duh! No kidding. Kind’a like saying. ‘…we make roads; you’ve to use this car.’

I’ve been watching a trend, just from our website, and noticing that Firefox is loosing ground as the preferred browser. The users are not defecting to Internet Explorer, they’re going to Chrome. Yeah, the browser that came out like 3 months ago. Firefox is a well established browser, fast, safe and secure. Chrome is officially the new guy on the block and is taking the Internet by storm. It’s crazy; a new browser like this taking off so fast and grabbing market share. I’ll have to watch it more in the future and report back.

Not to be Peewee Herman of the day, I’m sure Microsoft is just grasping their pants at this point, because between Firefox and Chrome they’re going to take from Microsoft the dominate market share they have enjoyed for years. Firefox and Chrome [and others]; they’re not going to do this by any magical means, they’re going to do this by simply doing things better, more secure and more frequent updates. Internet Explorer 8 is still in beta and is slated to be released some time soon, but as some others have reported the browser is already going to be behind. It’s memory usage, plug-in support, lacking user interface and security issues are going to be an immediate ‘thumbs down’ when the gates open for race time.

Internet Explorer has been plagued with huge security problems for years [since inception actually], and NOT small ones. The reason, the browser is so tightly integrated with the Operating System it makes attacks on the systems easy and the results of the attacks can be severe. The bonus point of Internet Explorer was that it started almost immediately, but that’s because 90% of the browser components were already loaded in memory. Since the browser is integrated in to the Operating System there’s no telling what a malicious code writer can do, and Microsoft is not giving any opportunities to others to review their code [exposing crappy code and bloated memory usage].

One of the things that makes external browsers so attractive is the fact they’re NOT part of the Operating System; they’re separate and installed as an application with it’s own directory and its own set of files, not regimented by Microsoft and open to review by others. The browsers can’t be uninstalled [imagine that- UNINSTALLED]; try uninstalling Internet Explorer - even Microsoft testified that removing Internet Explorer from the Operating System could have serious side effects. They put the browser so far in the Operating System if you remove the browser the Operating System could be damaged. Am I the only one who thinks this is nuts?

Internet Explorer has this little thing called ACTIVEX. This is what kills me; even Microsoft says not to use this, but you’ve to use it on their Microsoft update website.

Just about every website out there does some thing neutral [avoiding ACTIVEX] and that’s going to be Operating System friendly. The result of this is that a lot of websites don’t work with Firefox or other browsers because they’re pushing this exploitable piece of crap code- knowing it’s not secure. Visiting a website with ACTIVEX is actually funny; Internet Explorer will ask you [average user] if you want to do something with ACTIVEX… not knowing what it is or what effects it could have on your system your going to run it- BAM! You just got slammed with hard drive problems and 16 viruses installed! Your the proud parent of a nasty computer virus.
While these open source browsers may not be the fastest opening browsers; that’s not the point. The point is to be safe, secure, flexible, compatible and to be a comfortable fit to the end user. They offer the piece of mind that they’re not being watched or if you visit a website you’re not to suddenly have 16 programs installed on your PC without you having any time to react. If your unsure about the security or the way things are being handled, you can examine the code yourself or find the problems.

One of the very first things I do for my new machines or if I’m giving advice to others about security; the first thing is to turn off access to Internet Explorer. Doing this will make your computer 75% more secure. And if I was giving advice to Microsoft I would say stop putting the damn browser so close to the Operating System and allow it to be uninstalled; just because you wrote the Operating System doesn’t mean you do everything else just as good.

For Microsoft, the proof is in the pudding; example, ‘ONECARE‘ - nuff said.

If Internet Explorer was a girlfriend I would say, “Your too close, I need some space.” and not call back.

Regards,
