Google’s toolbar is a piece of junk. As I stated in my previous post Leaving Google, you are track everywhere you go on the web by google. That is an invasion of my privacy. I don’t want them to know that I like to look at snow flakes in the shape of Atari 2600s ( and I do). That is just the tip of the iceburg. The pop-up blocker in the google toolbar is a little too good. I have numerous people who have added a site to the ‘White List’ (list of allowed sites to have pop-ups) and the google toolbar still blocks it. The only way I have seen someone to have a pop-up work is to hold the control key down as you click on the link to open the pop-up, that is if the site has a link to the pop-up. If the site does not have a link, then you are s.o.l.
Join me in saying that the google toolbar sucks. If you need a pop-up blocker, use the one in your browser (even IE has one). Here is a link to google’s faqs on the toolbar.

I find great jubilation in my recent uncovering of this freeware gem. The website openly advertises itself as the Outlook alternative. The clean user interface and the intuitive functions will attract even the most skeptical users.
The initial download of the file is 6.5 MB; a drop in the bucket for anyone with a broadband connection. It’s well worth the time for experimentation and evaluation.

The guys at PhraseExpress seem to keep upping the ante with each new release.
For those who don’t know the application, it reduces the amount of repetitive typing/entry. The program can enter keystrokes, paste images, auto-correct words or insert paragraphs of information with just a few clicks or by setting up an autotext [short name]. This is a program that’s very simple and just about everyone can use in daily life. [Read More]

I have recently joined a fitness site called Gyminee. I have gotten out of shape the last couple of years due to several reasons. None of them have to do with me sitting on my rear playing video games. So, I am issuing a challenge to my partners for TechSideStories. I have a target to lose 20 punds. All it will take is not eating good food and going to the gym.
The site I named earlier is one of the better ones that I have found on the web (and I have looked). I was once a gym rat and have some experience in tracking my workouts and seeing great results. Gyminee has a free version and a pro version. I am using the free version. I am not sure I need to upgrade but will see.
Here are some of the features of the site:
- Locker Room - tracker charts and progress images (TSS guys please keep your shirts on)
- Workouts - use some that others have created or create your own
- Nutrition - keep track of what you eat and how good it is for you
- Challenges - join with others or just for you
- Groups - find people who cycle, run or what ever you like
- GymBuddies - these would be your friends (you can add me as your gym buddy
- Forums - have questions, they have answers (even if they are not right)
- Personal Journal - kind of like a gym twitter
Come join me in my challenge. Just add Sir Slur as your GymBuddy.
Till next time

For those who know me, I really like the travel programs [USB jumpdrives] and simplistic applications that do what they do & do very well.
I’ve been watching this freeware program for a while now and the author seems to really making some good progress with his efforts to make a simplistic stream lined person net-radio.
This program allows you to listen to net-radio, mark them as favorites and if your listening to a station and you like the song it will record the whole song for you to an MP3.
The program can be minimized to the system tray and as with any good program, the application checks for new versions of it’s self automatically [when you run it]. You can find the link to the application here and links to the forums here.
The fans/followers of this program are steadily offering good suggestions. I’m impressed thus far and look forward to what’s next.
Thanks for reading.

PaperPort is an application that allows the average user to try to organize their electronic documents. Whether that the pictures are imported or scanning documents, the program facilitates the function of trying to organize all this information with the efforts of trying to give the user a usable interface to do certain things with those documents, such as send e-mail and post to the web.
Pretty much anyone can use it. Only those who really want organize their stuff or make the effort to are going to try to use it. This application is not focused on business customers because the program offers no notable security options of it’s own; it only offers the security of the Windows Operating System. There is a mention of PDF security, but you can get that with most freeware programs that handle PDF. There is no internal user security in the program. [Read More]

In my current position, I deal with a lot of repetitious situations and over the years I found myself writing the same sentences over and over and over again. I found myself thinking that someone must have had the same idea; and they did. So I did some searches and I landed on a program/application called PhraseExpress.
PhraseExpress allows you to capture/store snippets of information that are phrases that you’ll repeat all the time. It stores text as well as pictures, and mixed text with images. So if you process new orders, handle customer service or do tech support. You can save yourself a ton of time and go with something like this…
If you have ever used a word processor your probably familiar with AUTOTEXT. This neat little feature allows you to type a few letters and then have a paragraph of information appear. If you like this, but want to expand it to every application, then this program is going be very useful to you.
Now PhraseExpress is free for personal use, but the author of this program kinda keeps track of what your doing via the program, so if the program thinks you might be using the program for other than personal use it’ll remind you. Now, on the website it says it’s free, but no one likes being accused of being a thief when their not; that’s why I don’t like his NAG screens. Free is Free, and if you feel otherwise, you should simply limit the program to 20 different items. If the customer likes it that much, they will pay the $30.
As useful as this program is, the one thing I look for is a self sustained program, a program that’s portable; placed on a jumpdrive and take it anywhere. This program doesn’t have this, but the author says it’ll be coming soon. I think this is a must for a program like this.
The program is nicely rounded with a auto-learn feature, clipboard manager and the ability to do some macro functions… and more.
Most of the time I post stuff that’s freeware, but this is note worthy.
Work smarter; not harder…

Nuance recently released [August 2008] their new version of their voice recognition software Dragon Naturally Speaking [DNS] version 10. And with every release they have touted greater speed and greater accuracy; the last version [v9] you didn’t even have to train to start using. Hands down this package is excellent.
DNS is the best voice recognition software there is, the software is not the problem; its the way the company markets this application is what I have a problem with…
