I’ve been reading all these articles and digesting all this information from the Internet and from TV and it’s really got my biscuit’a burn’n.

Here’s the thing- with every version of Windows it’s always the same hype and the same result- big talk and no walk; it was all falls and embarrassment. Anyone who’s spent more than 5 minutes in a IT shop knows [memorized] the installation screens of Win 95,98, ME and XP; they all say faster, better, more dependable and it was just the same garbage regurgitated over and over with no REAL jump in usability [XP was a nice step though]. There were no huge benefits.

Gizmodo posted a nice article, and while entertaining, it just got me going on all the things customers have been told in the past about the previous versions of Windows. With each version, customers have been promised these huge jumps on features and function that was supposed to revolutionize the world- it didn’t.

When Microsoft came out with [that god awful] Vista, it was pushed as the thing that ‘…makes you say wow’. The release of Vista was not the monumental release Microsoft wanted. They were being pressured to release a version of something; anything. It resulted in a super public relations nightmare and they had customers pissed who never thought they could be; getting emails left and right about how flawed this Operating System was. They pulled a George W. Bush and walked the line of everything is fine and ignored the press, the users and the [oh yeah] problems. Their thoughts were just keep pushing Vista- it’ll come around.

For those who know me, I really like the travel programs [USB jumpdrives] and simplistic applications that do what they do & do very well.

I’ve been watching this freeware program for a while now and the author seems to really making some good progress with his efforts to make a simplistic stream lined person net-radio.

This program allows you to listen to net-radio, mark them as favorites and if your listening to a station and you like the song it will record the whole song for you to an MP3.

The program can be minimized to the system tray and as with any good program, the application checks for new versions of it’s self automatically [when you run it]. You can find the link to the application here and links to the forums here.

The fans/followers of this program are steadily offering good suggestions. I’m impressed thus far and look forward to what’s next.

Screamer Radio.

Thanks for reading.

I know it is a typical cynical statement for someone drifting onto his mid 30’s to make, but for me who still listens to a minimum of 2 hours of music a day (thank you Shoutcast, Pandora, & Ed at CD Universe for all the addictions & suggestions), I am seeing a complete void in good music recently. It has gotten so bad, that I have to strain to find something halfway decent to buy, & I want to buy (yet the RIAA wants to blame file sharing and middle age house wives for the loss in revenue, when it is really their lack of providing anything worth while buying). I have gone as far to notice that listening people’s custom ring tones while waiting in line at Starbuck’s is more entertaining than anything pumped though the radio today.

Maybe it is because there just is nothing real left to whine or sing about (understanding that poor performing mutual make bad subjects for songs) is why music today seems so two dimensional and flat (Emo is just angst for angst sake), or maybe it is just all the good songs have already been written. I just feel that there must be something that can be done other than sitting & waiting for the next Radiohead album (who along with a few independent gems, are practically carrying the only torch worth mentioning).

So this is a call out to musicians everywhere, studio & garage alike, as I propose a new “Save the Music” campaign. Start writing and singing something worth while, to keep me away from my old collage play lists.

To show not all is lost, here is a short list of notables for 2008 (let’s follow their example).

Radiohead - In Rainbows
Aimee Mann - @#%&*! Smilers
Dinosaur Jr - Beyond
Poi Dog Pondering - 7
Sigur Ros - Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust

Here is my first iPhone blog attempt so all grammer & spelling may be subject at best. It is not often that an individual piece of technology matches it’s hype, but I have to say Apple got this one right on.

Where else can you blog from your bathroom (if you are into that sort of thing), check who outbid you on that Atari 2600 controller you are wanting, or serenade your lover with the theme from Top Gun on your PocketGuitar. Jam on…

Zoe Keating and her Cello x16

Zoe Keating uses Technology along with her cello to make haunting and melotic musics and sounds. With her cello and a computer, she can create unorthodox sounds, you would think came from a synthesizer. Zoe  would take her bow and smack it across the back of the cello to create a sharp sound. Another sound would be created by strumming the bow across the wooden edge of the cello. All these sounds are saved on her mac and then sampled and looped with a software called Ableton Live. Once recorded into her mac she can reply the samples back using a midi foot controller at her feet. With this technology she is able to make unique pieces far from her classical trained roots. She has made soundtracks for a horror movie as well as documentaries.

I discovered her music listening to an interview with her on one of my favorite NPR podcasts called RadioLab. I was on a plane ride home from business at the time and couldn’t help but close my eyes, shut off all the noises around me and completely immerse myself in her music. Her music is haunting and elegant. When you listen to it, its like you are listening to a string-quartet with a bunch of different instruments but its just the one with a technological edge.
