In case you missed it Xbox unveiled a whole redux to the Xbox 360 GUI they are calling New Xbox Experience. Gone are the blades that take up the whole screen. Now we have screens which are less cluttered, a fresh 3D perspective look, Avatars, a new party system, netflix integration, ability to load games straight to the hard drive and much more.

I’ve been a fan of Craigslist for a while and I think it was the perfect answer to EBAY’s totalitarian ways of doing business.
The boys at www.IWantSoftwareThat.com have answered the call to make it even easier.
They have created a freeware program that really keeps an eye out for what your looking for and regularly updates you when it finds new matches; it’s almost like having a personal shopper.
The program in design is beautiful and it’s usage is simplistic. I love the setup, design and usage. The items your looking for are entered in a query string and you can save the search and then every 30 minutes the CLA will present you with a update of new and exciting finds.
You can set the program for multiple searches and it keeps chuggin’ away.
When you find something interesting you click the link and it takes you directly to the listing.
One thing I wish the program would do is [because of it's own doing] is for search results that have images; find those images in the listing and allow you to preview the images in the program, but other than that, this is a keeper and recommend it to all who ‘Craigslist’ around for treasures.

Firefox has been a longstanding symbol of an open source triumph, but open source means support by volunteers [time, code or testing] or financial backing. For many years Google has made Firefox it’s surgical point from which to stab at Microsoft; and it’s been an embarrassing and infectious wound.
Competition is the catalyst that sparks innovation and improvement. When Netscape was the dominate browser; that didn’t please Microsoft too much. So Microsoft released [gave away for free] Internet Explorer, but that wasn’t good enough; they had to meet or beat Netscape to dominate the market- and so they did. But once the market was flooded with Internet Explorer users Microsoft decided they didn’t need to do anything else and for years it was a series of bug fixes and patches with each release - and so they have not much changed from one version to the next.

A couple of weeks ago an article was posted about Firefox reaching 20% of the market, but I think there’s more to it than that. I propose to say that this actually represents the population of intelligent people on the Internet. I think this is a trend showing that the people on the Internet are getting smarter and when people get smarter they make better decisions. Because what smart people do is take information from many different places and they analyze it and then they make an educated decision about it. So Yes, I think there’s hope yet for the users of the Internet.
This fact is represented in the usage chart our website. [Read More]

During a recent voice recognition hiatus I went in search of alternatives to Dragon Naturally Speaking. The problem was that DNS 10 wasn’t compatible with Vista 64, so knowing that Vista had Speech recognition built in, I decided to give it a try; what could it hurt right?
Setting up the speech recognition in Vista wasn’t hard, but the actual usage was horrible [in comparison to DNS]. You enter the control panel, enable voice recognition and do some simple voice training [5-10 minutes]; something you don’t have to do with DNS 9.
I guess it’s a silly thing, but Nuance has had years to perfect their SR technology and the user interface. I think the simplest way for me to say it is ‘the meat and potatoes’ of getting stuff done. [Read More]

When I upgraded my system at home and purchased a 64-bit operating system, I wasn’t really sure of the problems that I was going to incur, but I was really surprised that a lot of the high-end games that I had worked perfectly on Vista 64 and one of my most productive packages Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 wasn’t. Immediately this was an impairment to my daily routines.
The 64-bit systems are beginning to become more commonplace when purchasing a new PC. It’s the logical choice in the evolution of technology going from 8-bit, 16 bit, 32 bit and then to 64-bit [and so on]. the 64-bit systems offer more processing speed and the ability to utilize more than 3 GB of physical memory, as compared to 32-bit system. While the market is being flooded with 64-bit systems a lot of manufacturers and software makers are not coding for 64-bit operating systems and this makes things a little bit tricky. Because basically you’re putting yourself out there as a guinea pig in a new arena of technology. [Read More]

USB 2, it’s hard for me to say this; for years you’ve been real good for us. Your name is as common as Apple Pie, but your services are no longer required… USB 3 get in here.
USB 3 is being prepped right now. The USB plug we use now is not the same as the USB 3 plug; with v3 the plugs will be shaped differently, but it will be backward compatible and will retain its standard Plug and Play feature.
It’s reportedly going to be divided into two parts. The first part will be the USB 2.0 four-wire version with UTP data pair and power with ground; to be backward compatible. The second part will have five connections: two UTP lane (one is uplink and the other is downlink) with a ground. An optical connector and cable will be available in the future; for the high speed transfers.

Microsoft is offering startups the oppurtinity to use thier software for 3 years FREE. The program is called BizSpark. There are a few rules to be able to use the software. The company has to be younger than 3 years old, have less than $1 million in revenue, and pay list price for the software after the free period is up. Here is a link to the program guide.
You might say that last item is the catch. It kind of is. The kind of piece being that you do not have to use only their software. You can use any bits or pieces you want and then use other companies software where you do not use Microsoft. You also will be in a start-up directory provided by Microsoft.
Microsoft may not have the best technology, but they sure do provide the most assistance to startup companies of any of the software giants out there (ie, google, Oracle, IBM)
Till next time
