I was doing a little light reading today on the Net and heard something about a problem with the Economy.  Some people say it is not doing so well.  You know, they might be right.  To many people’s surprise, now is a good time to start a company.  I will not go into details as to why, there are plenty of people writing about that right now (see Texas Startup Blog).

What I am writing about is how to get started.  One of the best places to learn about starting a company is MicroSoft.  Thats right, MicroSoft.  Turns out they make most of their money from selling their software to companies.

MicroSoft has a small business section to their website.  When you get there, you will notice 9 different tabs at the top.  They have divided it up into steps that helps walk you through your process of setting up your company.  You might not need all of them, but you will learn a lot from it.

I think everyone, at some level, is interested in saving gas or going ‘green’. I think one problem is one person/entity is trying to provide a solution; it’s not funny.

You have a company like GM going to release the Chevy VOLT that’s going to require gas. Japan [Genepax] has a car that runs completely on water for an hour. The Chevy VOLT requires gas to sustain the electrical system on the car, but if the VOLT would incorporate the Genepax system, no gas is required at all.

Coupling this technology with solar panels on the car or gas with solar abilities, would continuously charge the car. Essentially you would have to have water and sunlight for your vehicle to run. Sounds too easy, but the reality is that companies don’t want to share, they want to provide a solution of their own with no help from others and sadly this is where the biggest problem is.

Pride is a huge problem. No one wants to admit they need help, or that someone else has/had a  great idea and they don’t want to ask about it, how it works or if they could use it.

Ego is another. There are too many people exceptionally happy riding around in their sports cars, hummers, SUV and other large vehicles. They want to keep the size the appearance of ‘…I’m better/faster than you’. Car companies recognize this and are trying to marry the two ideas of green and macho.

We are still looking at 10+ years before we can have a self-sustainable car. I just wish they would swallow their pride and collectively make a better product.

This is a perfect example of what I have been talking about for years, and frankly, I love the way this article was written.

The problem is that, fundamentally, the Microsoft products are inferior and can’t compete with 0pen source projects. They are driven by some thing other than the requests of the users/customers.

Microsoft keeps churning our these programs and updates always in a reactive type position and there’s nothing they are doing that’s keeping pace with what other projects are doing to improve technology and the internet experience.

PaperPort is an application that allows the average user to try to organize their electronic documents.  Whether that the pictures are imported or scanning documents, the program facilitates the function of trying to organize all this information with the efforts of trying to give the user a usable interface to do certain things with those documents, such as send e-mail and post to the web.

Pretty much anyone can use it. Only those who really want organize their stuff or make the effort to are going to try to use it. This application is not focused on business customers because the program offers no notable security options of it’s own; it only offers the security of the Windows Operating System. There is a mention of PDF security, but you can get that with most freeware programs that handle PDF. There is no internal user security in the program. [Read More]

In my current position, I deal with a lot of repetitious situations and over the years I found myself writing the same sentences over and over and over again. I found myself thinking that someone must have had the same idea; and they did. So I did some searches and I landed on a program/application called PhraseExpress.

PhraseExpress allows you to capture/store snippets of information that are phrases that you’ll repeat all the time. It stores text as well as pictures, and mixed text with images. So if you process new orders, handle customer service or do tech support. You can save yourself a ton of time and go with something like this…

If you have ever used a word processor your probably familiar with AUTOTEXT. This neat little feature allows you to type a few letters and then have a paragraph of information appear. If you like this, but want to expand it to every application, then this program is going be very useful to you.

Now PhraseExpress is free for personal use, but the author of this program kinda keeps track of what your doing via the program, so if the program thinks you might be using the program for other than personal use it’ll remind you. Now, on the website it says it’s free, but no one likes being accused of being a thief when their not; that’s why I don’t like his NAG screens. Free is Free, and if you feel otherwise, you should simply limit the program to 20 different items. If the customer likes it that much, they will pay the $30.

As useful as this program is, the one thing I look for is a self sustained program, a program that’s portable; placed on a jumpdrive and take it anywhere. This program doesn’t have this, but the author says it’ll be coming soon. I think this is a must for a program like this.

The program is nicely rounded with a auto-learn feature, clipboard manager and the ability to do some macro functions… and more.

Most of the time I post stuff that’s freeware, but this is note worthy.

Work smarter; not harder…

Don’t you hate it when you are in a rush for work and forget your umbrella on a rainy day? For my area its no big deal because it hardly ever rains but for many other people that is not the case. Welp, someone has created a genius of a site, UmbrellaToday.com.

You can use the site 2 ways. One, you can just go to the site and type in your zip code. You are presented with either YES or NO for bringing your umbrella. SWEET! The other thing you can do is for lazy people like me and schedule a SMS Text message to your phone when you need your umbrella. You just need to tell the site what time of day you want the text sent to your phone along with your phone number. How cool is that? GENIUS!

Well ladies and gentlemen, Fios TV is about to make a major leap forward with their update here in North Texas.  The update will include upwards of 200 bug fixes (thank goodness).  My scheduled programs to record are not recording.  I am getting upset.

I will progress.  Here are some of the things that are being added/enhanced:

Widgets:  I am not real big on their widgets.  That is why I have computers.  Although, if you are into fantasy football, they are integrating a widget with ESPN and their service.  I would use this if I was in a league this year.

Games: They are adding games to be played through your tv service.  I am not sure this is a good idea.  More of a marketing ploy.  I tried to play the ones that Tivo had, when I still had my Tivo, and did not like it.  Using your tv remote the experience is not very good.

HD Streaming: In the past you could only stream SD shows that you had recorded on your DVR.  This is a great update in my mind as we record almost only in HD.  Why do you think we bought the big tv.

Content Discovery: Again, this is a feature that Tivo had.  I like this one.  It will discover new shows for you.  You will also be able to see what others and friends are recording.  Kind of like a social network for TV recordings

Web Scheduling: This is my favorite update coming down the pipe.  Unfortunately, only a select few will get this at first, but everyone should have it by end of the year.  This allows you to go online from any computer and see what you have to be recorded.  You will also be able to see how much space you have on your DVR.  And finally you will be able to schedule new shows to be recorded or edit what you have scheduled.

They have other features coming as well, but these where the best ones in my opinion.
